Not even 1 pm yet, and we can already hear chanting.

whereismorgan:

In a “better for them, worse for me” move, the Muslim Brotherhood has switched their protests from Tahrir square where the opposition has been protesting, to Cairo University, which is located a mere 10 minute walk from my apartment. By noon, thousands of pro-Morsi/pro-Islamist protesters had already gathered. Around 12:30 I was in the kitchen cooking up my lunch, when I realized that I could hear very faint chanting. This is from a window that points away from the direction of the protests. From the balcony, that faces towards them, they were slightly louder, but we still can’t hear what they are saying. It is very eerie.

Matthew says that people may march through Mesaha square, which is the area my (15th floor) apartment overlooks, but my guess is that most marches will opt for the wider/more visible Dokki Street a block over. Here’s hoping for no marches, because if they pass through Mesaha, they are almost guaranteed to be heading for 6th of October bridge, which ends up right in the middle of Tahrir. If they march to Tahrir, there will be blood.

More updates to come.

It sounds like Orcs. Straight up LOTR type shit. Heeyyy study abroad.

The yearly “March of Brides,” which this year took place Oct. 17, mourns the death of a Dominican-American woman named Gladys Ricart, who was shot in 1999 by an ex on her wedding day to another man. It’s also meant as a protest against domestic violence in general.

The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it’s profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.

Muslims To NYPD: ‘Respect Us, We Will Respect You’

NEW YORK (AP) — Hundreds of Muslims prayed in a lower Manhattan park and marched to New York Police headquarters Friday to protest a decade of police infiltrating mosques and spying on Muslim neighborhoods.

Bundled in winter clothes, men and women knelt as the call to prayer echoed off the cold stone of government buildings.

“Being Muslim does not negate our nationality,” Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid told the crowd of about 500 gathered in Foley Square, not far from City Hall and local courthouses. “We are unapologetically Muslim and uncompromisingly American.”

The demonstration was smaller and more subdued than the Occupy Wall Street protests that led to clashes with police and made headlines worldwide. Police wore windbreakers, not riot gear, and protesters called for improved relations with police.

“We want for you to respect us,” Abdur-Rashid said, “and we will respect you.”

It was the first organized opposition to the NYPD’s intelligence tactics since an Associated Press investigation revealed widespread spying programs that documented every aspect of Muslim life in New York. Police infiltrated mosques and student groups. Plainclothes officers catalogued Middle Eastern restaurants and their clientele. Analysts built databases on Arab cab drivers and monitored Muslims who changed their names.

I’m not sure why, but I really enjoy the images of ranks of Muslims praying on demonstrations, especially the ones that came out of Egypt.  There’s something especially nice about the juxtaposition of the New York background to this.

This is beautiful.

Some people protest carrying signs. Some people protest by making activist radical music. Sometimes people try to just make it through a day and not kill themselves, and that’s their activism for right then, because that’s all they have.
