Indonesian artist Eko Nugroho creates sculptures and 2D works that probe the tension between beauty and violence. Nugroho’s life-size resin sculptures of gun-toting human figures in flower suits are unnerving at a first glance. Rebels or enemies in unlikely disguises, these characters elicit a mixed reaction of fear and surprise, even laughter. Combining text and images, Nugroho’s elaborate tapestries put a surreal, folkloric spin on propaganda art. Take a look at some photos of Eko Nugroho’s work by Desi Suryanto and Oki Permatasari HERE: http://hifructose.com/2013/05/08/eko-nugrohos-sculptures-and-tapestries-mix-danger-and-beauty/

[Self-portraits by Carrie Mae Weems, Käthe Kollwitz, Judy Baca, and Frida Kahlo, text “Never apologize for selfies”]

Wanted to get modern women artists and some WOC up in this one.  If you reblog it would be cool if you kept the part in the brackets so these artists, two of whom are still working, will get credit—this conversational part below is nbd.

“For the opening of the New Museum at 235 Bowery, Rondinone will reprise his 2001 work Hell, Yes! The installation encapsulates the philosophy of openness, fearlessness, and optimism that surrounds the New Museum’s reemergence in the contemporary art community, as well as its history as the home of socially committed contemporary art.”

“American Royalty” - Illustrations by Sam Spratt commissioned by Childish Gambino

Limited Edition Prints Available: royalty.samspratt.com

So, I’m pretty excited to finally share with you my full project with Actor/Writer/Rapper Donald Glover. What began as cover art for his last album “Royalty” evolved into a series of Rockwell-esque vignettes on Americana meant to highlight the side of hip-hop that tends to take a back seat to “money, cars, and jewelry” – where you come from.

The collection of 10 illustrations cover a wide-spectrum of the little moments – the struggles, the simple pleasures, the risks, the irony, the humor, the hopes, and the realities of the American life that maybe isn’t quite so cookie cutter. For me, this was a rare privilege to both work with an insanely talented person as well as learn an IMMENSE amount in the process of creating scenes completely outside of my bubble. All of these are available as extremely limited edition, signed, numbered, archival art prints at royalty.samspratt.com and a video interview on the project with Complex/Masked Gorilla is here

A huge thanks to Funfere Koroye, who assisted and modelled for me on “Summer” and “Royalty”

Q: Why did the owl stay up all night?
A: BECAUSE HE WAS MADE OF COFFEE
